vMac raspberry Pi & OS X

:anyone:
Code: Select all

Hello, I have been interested in building a hybrid retro mac Classic able to have a contemporary connection to the internet while at the same time being able to connect to modern external devices.

when I saw the article of the super mini actual working model of a macintosh classic a Lightbulb lit up.

I have been trying for weeks to make a project similar. I am just not as creative and talented as Mr. Leake.

my creativity only goes as far as taking an actual Mac Classic, gutting it and replacing its insides with a 10 inch LCD video display and a connected Raspberry pi.
:headbang:
Is anyone out there interested?

This is how far I have gotten:
i downloaded MinivMac 3.23 from Sourceforge.
Code: Select all
http://minivmac.sourceforge.net/doc/start.html]

I downloaded the rom files from this website.
Code: Select all
http://www.theoldcomputer.com/roms/index.php?folder=Apple/Macintosh

at the time I did, vmac.rom was available to download.
up until finding the ROM here, I was only able to run mini vMac.app on my iMac as far as getting a error message telling the rom checksum failed type 'c' to continue because the "vMac.rom" may be corrupted.
after googling vmac.rom i came across theoldcomputer.com and downloaded the file. I still was not up and running. or at least I don't think i was. the problem was new but it seemed a bit more promising. the mini vMac.app would now chime but display one of the boot error icons flashing in the middle of the window. after contemplating what could be wrong, I figured it was operating as designed, I had just not had the Macintosh System OS ready. Unfortunately I had deleted the vmac.rom file unfortunately i can not recreate the steps I had taken to get the chime because it appears the vmac.rom is no longer available on theoldcomputer.com nor am I able to properly create a working.rom. I have tried changing the mac classic rom file name to vmac.rom and a few other macintosh rom files to vMac.rom but i am stuck at the rom checksum failed screen.
is anyone able to or would anyone be interested in giving me a hand in figuring this out? what should I do?
p.s. I was going to get this all working on OS X or windows before attempting to on the raspberry Pi.
:typing:

:freakout: Ok. I am one step closer to trying to get this started on a raspberry Pi or linux machine because after thinking this out to post the original thread i have run across a chinese website to download a working vmac.rom file at which afterwords i was able to continue on with the source forge getting started documentation.

Turns out I was on the right track getting the chime from the mini vMac.app

the next step was to drag and drop the system startup disk image i had gotten from apple.com's older software archives.

after i found that little tidbit i also was able to run the macpaint.dsk disk image to be able to run mac paint.

the Chinese website i found:

Code: Select all
http://www.rolli.ch/MacPlus/welcome.html

i downloaded
Macdraw.dsk.sea.sit
macpaint.dsk.sea
system 6.0.8 - finder...sea.sit
vmac.rom.sea.sit

later I was able to go to the Mac APP store and get stuffit expander
Code: Select all
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/stuffit-expander/id405580712?mt=12

I configured stuff its advanced preferences to handle all archives.
i then expanded each sea.sit archive into my mini vMac working directory.
this is where i was able to open the mini vMac.app get the chime with the blinking question mark center disk icon.
after I saw the blinking disk i dragged and dropped the system startup disk image. in the blink of an eye the "mac" booted up. after all i had to do was drag and drop the macpaint.dsk on the window and a disk would show up on the vMac desktop.
:thankyou:

In my search for more knowledge about running classic systems a few other websites came up.

Code: Select all
http://macintoshgarden.org/

this website is about "preserving" abandon ware classics for vintage apples and it appears other consoles like the atari2600, colecovision, and SNES. the interesting thing is the emulators appear to be for pre OS X operating systems. but they most likely would be run within an OS9 emulator running on OS X :ugeek:

I am going to check this site next:

Code: Select all
http://www.macorchard.com/classic/

It appears similar.

and then i also ran across this site:
Code: Select all
http://mac.appstorm.net/roundups/games/9-classic-os-9-games-you-should-install-on-your-old-mac/

it mentioned classic games like Wolfenstein and I think doom. Oh and duke nukem.

I wasn't much of a gamer back then but i did have those games on my PC at the time just to demonstrate what computers could do back then. I would also put them on the machines in school to up my street cred :freakout:
at least i grew out of wearing glasses by then.Still wore the goodwill clothes and hand me downs. Luckily the Grunge phase was in so I didn't stick out as much.
